Image of an eyeIt is the year 2010. Humanity has advanced technologically by leaps and bounds. Culturally we are more diverse than ever before and expanding rapidly across the face of the globe at an alarming rate. Medicine has made significant advances. Science has streamlined itself and is progressing rapidly. Yet, young gay people are committing suicide at an increasing rate.

Suicide is a last resort. It is a resort for a desperate soul that feels that they have no allies, no support and are deeply alone in the world. Suicide in young gay people is linked to public humiliation at schools across the nation. That public humiliation stems from one extreme wing of society, the right religious wing! Ironically, the people who want everyone else to believe in an all forgiving, loving, compassionate god are the same entities that are harassing individuals who are either atheist, gay or opposing in their beliefs on the afterlife.

WHO CARES ABOUT THE AFTERLIFE? That comes after right now! We should all be living for the moment, with compassion and love for our fellow humanity. We should support, aid and befriend those around us. We should lend an ear, volunteer a friendly voice in council, and feel by walking in the shoes of our fellow humans. That is the real message of religion, to teach compassion and love for your fellow beings. To know the difference between harming another and doing the right thing.

There is absolutely no excuse for gay youths of any walk of life to end of killing themselves. By seeing this alarming trend we are seeing that our society is clearly getting a big “F” for a grade in the education of our youngsters. Where are the lessons of compassion, respect and personal integrity? How come those issues are not the main focus in our schools? Why are we still focused on who is on the football team, who has the most girlfriends, who dresses or acts different than the rest, and who is the most popular? Have we made no advancements in our society in the regards to social prejudice and individual persecution? Are we still stuck in the ’80s? Are we still living The Breakfast Club ideal of school and didn’t we ever learn anything from that movie?

To those people who feel it is ok to persecute your fellow peers because they are different from you, I have can only say, “Don’t worry, you will get yours in the end! Someone else will persecute you to the point of your own suicidal thoughts! Be proud that you are a bully right now, cause eventually someone else is going to come by who is going to smack you right down where you stand and take your bully crown for themselves!”

To those individuals who are so deeply depressed that the thought of ending their own life based on the ideals of others is running through their head, I say, “It’s just not worth it. Your own image and vision of yourself is far superior to anyone else’s sick and twisted idea of what you should be. This is YOUR life and only YOUR life. Take personal pride in yourself. Stand up for what your own beliefs are and be proud of yourself. Uniqueness is what drives our planet. Those people who fall into line just because it is what everyone else has done are actually not living in the moment and clueless about life. History will erase them. Don’t erase yourself before you have achieved your own greatness and experienced all of the wonderful bounty that life is offering you. Time heals all wounds entirely and soon your tormentors will be non-existent. And then you will be able to look back on that same bully from your past and feel sorry for them, for their own desperate attempt to feel important have failed miserably.”

Life is a precious thing. Treasure your own life above the opinion of another.
